Too much moisture in the air of your home can be rather unbearable. Commercial dehumidifiers are great tools to remove excess moisture, keep your home safe from potential damage and mold, and keep the atmosphere comfortable. In order to keep your machine working for a long time at peak performance, there are some basic maintenance steps for you to take.
Proper Placement
Keep your dehumidifier at least six inches away from walls and furniture. This will ensure that the intake and exhaust vents are clear. The room in which the dehumidifier is placed should also be at least sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit to avoid the freezing or overheating of the coils. These same coils should also be checked periodically for frost and dust.
Maintain Humidistat
The optimal humidity level in your home is between forty and fifty percent. After a flood, this level can be thrown off. During water damage restoration, be sure that the humidistat on your dehumidifier is set to this level remove the unnecessary moisture. Don’t set it too low. Too much moisture removed can lead to just as many problems as not enough, causing dry skin, an irritated respiratory system and cracked floors and walls.
Cleaning
Not only do you need to periodically empty the water collection tank, you also need to occasionally wash the tank with soap and warm water and then disinfect it, which will prevent mold and mildew growth. Be sure to vacuum the intake and exhaust vents as well in order to prevent dust and debris from building up and causing blockages, which can inhibit the performance of your machine.
Change the Filter
Most dehumidifiers are equipped with filters that remove dust and allergens from the air while they work. These filters should be changed periodically. Some models have washable filters. Consult the owner’s manual for how frequently the filter should be changed or cleaned.
Compressor
If you don’t wait long enough between turning off the dehumidifier and then turning it back on, you run the risk of overheating. Be sure to wait at least ten minutes between cycles to avoid this.
Properly maintaining your dehumidifier is very important. As long as you keep it clear of obstructions, keep it clean, and replace old parts, you can keep it running at its best for a long time.
