Four Tips on Building a Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a way of organizing a closet to pare it down to the bare essentials. The point of a capsule wardrobe is to streamline a closet into pieces that make the wearer feel good and reduce clutter. Seasonal pieces can be added to the capsule wardrobe but the emphasis should be on classic, fashionable pieces of good quality that will last and can be worn year round.

Shoes First

Shoes can add a lot of clutter to a closet, one of the first things that can go a long way in building a classic and well-functioning capsule wardrobe is to sort through your shoes. You want to keep shoes that fit well, are in the best condition and fit your needs. For men, one pair of dress shoes, one pair of casual shoes and one pair of exercise shoes is a good start. For women, we can apply a similar strategy but one can add a pair of heels or business flats. From here the wearer’s needs can be evaluated and they should add other necessary shoes but not to excess.

Pants, Skirts, and Bottoms Oh My

This can be the most overwhelming part of building a capsule wardrobe. Most people have several pairs of pants: jeans, dress pants, khakis etc. For women’s skirts and dresses are also part of that number. Always start by keeping the clothes that fit best, are in best condition and are in colors that won’t clash with the rest of the wardrobe you will keep.

Because the wearer likely doesn’t know what the rest of the wardrobe will comprise at this point. It’s acceptable to put more clothes in the keep pile than the wearer will keep. The pile of clothes that will be kept will be narrowed down further as the process is continued.

Embrace a Daily Uniform

A lot of us have a distinct type of clothing they feel good in and while the color may change the overall content and structure of the outfit doesn’t. This tip is great for office dwellers, parents, or people who work from home people. Say, for example, you are a person who naturally gravitates to long sleeve shirts with buttons and black pants use that gravitation to help weed out other clothes you don’t wear as often.

Declutter Accessories

Accessories hold a lot of bulk in many people’s wardrobe. Most people have pieces of jewelry and other pieces that were gifts, or they have accumulated that they don’t gravitate to or enjoy anymore. It’s perfectly okay for items that won’t be worn to be discarded. Items that hold personal significance can be lovingly stored someplace other the closet to be kept and cherished without adding clutter to the day-to-day collection of clothing.

In, short a capsule wardrobe at its simplest form is not about how many pieces someone has in their closet but that they like and wear everything that’s there. A wardrobe should not bring up feelings anxiety or guilt. A person should be able to create a functional and fashionable collection of clothing that inspires and comforts them.

Style of Design strives to be anything but just another blog en-vogue. What that really means is we cover fashion and style, luxury travel, trending topics, and even sexy tech (gadgets, accessories, and more) not in your typical mainstream way.

This contradiction in itself is not what you would expect from a blog partly named “vogue”–but we think of ourselves as the new mainstream instead. Started years ago, this blog has rebranded itself countless times to what you see today. Let the blogging journey continue :)
