Wearing Football Shirts and Looking Good

At one time, football was a man’s game, stadiums were filled with men and their sons and the ladies were left at home.  But the modern game is more inclusive, with the success of women’s football teams showing that the ladies have taken to the game in a big way.  More and more women are becoming supporters of their team too and want to wear a shirt or other football gear in support.  So how can you wear your football shirts and still look good?

Don’t worry about sponsors

One thing that used to put women off wearing football shirts were the sponsors names emblazoned on the front.  Who wants to walk around with a shirt advertising a cigarette brand?  But modern shirts are much more diverse, as are the interests of the ladies.

A lot of football teams are sponsored by companies such as online gambling sites.  According to online gambling site M88, many more women now use these sites for a little flutter themselves.  This means that the idea of wearing a shirt with a gambling sponsor on it isn’t an issue.  Likewise, shirts featuring brands such as car manufacturers, banks or travel companies are all acceptable for most women.

Wearing the shirt

The great thing about football shirts is that they work in a huge range of styles.  Of course, the classic pairing is with a pair of jeans for that casual, just come from the match look.  But if you want to increase the style element a little, pair a shirt with a high rise waist skinny jeans style.  Alternatively, you can get a shirt that is a little longer in length and wear it with your favourite jeggings.  There you get the jeans look and the leggings feel for a trendier football fashion style.

Vintage shirts are a big trend at the moment and ideal if you want to avoid the current look – some of those colours for certain teams are a bit shocking!  Vintage shirts can be actual old shirts that someone has had in their wardrobe for the last ten years or they can be vintage style shirts, modern replicas of a shirt from a specific time period.

Some uproar was heard when Manchester United released a replica shirt for women with a low cut neckline, branding it ‘sexist’.  However, if it works for you, then there’s nothing wrong with opting for a women’s replica shirt.  It can be more flattering for some shapes and sizes and if it doesn’t fit your tastes, then you can simply pick up a men’s version instead for those boyfriend looks.

Football style

If wearing an actual replica shirt is a step too far for you, then look at the classic football associated styles and see what works there.  Fred Perry is an iconic brand that is most often associated with tennis but their football associations are strong too.  Pair them with your favourite flare jeans for a bit of a retro look.

Many clubs also have a range of shirts that carry the club logo without being a full replica shirt and if you want just stepping into the world of football fashion, these might be ideal.
